My mom wrote us an email suggesting that we watch this movie, and suggested our cocktail be “Thriller on the Rocks.” I took half of her advice.
I was thinking about Jenna and Matty’s happily ever after, in their pink house probably in a New York suburb. The type of East Coast adults with Bernie stickers on their car, who drink kombucha on tap, and proudly brandish their L.L. Bean credit card. Their apple-cider vinegar still has ‘the mother’ and yes, they did try Whole 30.
I imagine that Jenna’s 13-year-old ideals, that everything should be fair and just, that people should be kind to each other, extends to their bodies, their values and the environment. When they want to indulge, there will be no artificial sweeteners, colors or preservatives. Initially, I was thinking about using a sorbet in this drink, but the gelato spoke to me.
The best joke of 13 Going on 30 happens while Jenna (Jennifer Garner) is drinking a strawberry daiquiri: Lucy (Judy Greer) tells her that a cute guy at the bar is checking her out, and Jenna’s 13 year old brain zooms in on the adolescent sitting behind them at a booth and not the handsome older gentleman at the bar who was actually making eyes.
So it seemed natural to whip up a pink strawberry drink for our viewing!
- ¾ cup strawberry gelato
- Splash of milk
- 3 large ice cubes
- 2 oz white rum
- Fresh strawberry slice for garnish
Blend all ingredients, makes two modest or one large serving
